Carl's Crazy Paving Blog

Hello, my name is Carl and this is my paving blog. My friends think I am a bit of a loser as I love paving so much. My love of paving started when I was six years old and I saw my dad laying down new paving stones in our garden. I was amazed at the size of the things and I immediately started to examine the paving stones I found all around my neighbourhood. When I became a teenager, I started to hang around in my dad's workshop and he taught me how to lay and repair different types of paving. Even though I didn't follow in my dad's footsteps, I still take a keen interest in all things paving.

Benefits of an Epoxy Terrazzo-Look Floor for Your Commercial Space

You may love the look of classic terrazzo floors, which are ideal for business environments and homes and garages. However, instead, you could opt for an epoxy terrazzo-look floor. Here are several benefits of this alternative.

Floor Level

Traditional terrazzo floors are relatively thick as they're created from a layer of mortar that's filled with marble and granite pieces. The cement mixture is poured on the subfloor and polished to create a smooth finish. The problem with these surfaces is that when you pour the mortar over an existing concrete slab, the floor can become too high. Thus, you may need a recessed area onto which you can pour the terrazzo cement mixture.

You won't have this problem, however, with epoxy flooring, as it's much thinner. These floors comprise an epoxy and hardener mixture that is applied to the floor, where it melds with the concrete base. To create the terrazzo effect, fine chips of marble and granite are added.

These floors add little height to the floor, and in this way, they're more convenient than traditional terrazzo. Plus, epoxy terrazzo floors are lighter than cement, so they're suitable if your business is on the upper floor of a multi-storey building. It won't add as much weight and possibly put pressure on the building structure.

Seamless

Terrazzo epoxy covers floors with a continuous finish. The surface isn't broken up with cluttering grout lines. This has practical benefits also, as a seamless floor doesn't create dirt-catching crevices, making it easy to clean. Additionally, the epoxy finish doesn't shrink, so you can install it over expansive areas in a large restaurant or showroom without issues.

Design Variety

You also have many design choices with epoxy terrazzo-look floors. As well as granite and marble chips, you can add flakes of coloured glass and other elements. The contractors can also create a more complicated design using divider strips to form a border or walkway. Or you could add a graphic picture or a logo to the flooring.

Quicker Installation

Epoxy floors are quicker to complete than traditional terrazzo as they don't require so much curing time. Thus, you can update the floor of your premises with a quick turnaround and get your business running sooner. Plus, epoxy is hard-wearing and typically lasts for many years. You won't have to replace it, possibly for decades. This will save money over the long term, as you won't have to deal with floor replacement costs soon.
